Winter’s Coat

KarenCooks Gardens gardening

This photo was taken two weeks ago when the gardens were still bundled up keeping warm under their winter coats. Just like a down jacket the snow protects, insulates, and later provides much needed moisture down deep. A lot of change can happen in a few weeks. With the warmer temps and longer days all the snow has melted except for a few patches hiding in the shady corners. Every morning we make our rounds, checking on what survived and what we lost to the unexpected single digit temps in mid-September. We are also getting our first glimpses of what is coming back to life. Looking out our bedroom window we can see the bright, green stems and leaves of last season’s leftover crops. Spring onions, leeks, spinach, and kale are starting to sprout and grow. The gardens have shed their winter coats and spring has sprung.

Thorn Creek Cookery
It’s the classic love story of a city girl who falls head over heels for a tender-hearted country boy. Together, David and I have raised and educated our four sons on a historic homestead nestled among the wheat and legume fields just outside of Moscow, Idaho. We have made it a priority to immerse ourselves with the culture, music, food, and people of the surrounding region. Come on in and take a look…
